AC16 CLASS 2-8-2 LOCOMOTIVE

All AC16 class locomotives were fitted with former C16 tenders after the war. The original tenders had a major design fault in that the coal plate went all the way down to floor level. Standard practice around the world is to have a small compartment under the coal plate which is attached to the water tank. This means that when the coal level is low, there is still enough weight distributed over both bogies to balance the tender. The original tenders were not designed this way, so when they were running low on coal there was very little weight on the leading bogie of the tender and they had a tendancy to bounce... right off the track. QR tried to remedy this problem by placing a 25mph speed limit on the AC16 class, however this did not work so the tenders were replaced.

The original boiler of AC16 number 221 is at the Ipswich Workshops. It was decided it would be more cost effective to build a new boiler rather than restore the existing one. This boiler will not be discarded but kept in storage. The new boiler for AC16 number 221 is the world's FIRST all-welded steel boiler. Apparently Queensland Rail has been getting enquires from preservation groups all over the world. Since this photo was taken, QR has completed pressure testing on this boiler and it passed with flying colours.
